The recent introduction of Class L by the January 2026
publication of BS ISO 3941:2026 creates a dedicated fire classification for
lithium-ion cells and batteries. Class L recognises that lithium-ion battery
fires work differently from other electrical fires, presenting complex hazards
that need a dedicated risk assessment, protection strategies, and response
planning.
Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday operations, including:
- Electric vehicles and charging infrastructures
- Energy storage systems
- Offices and industrial workplaces
- Portable tools and equipment
- Warehouses, workshops, and logistics environments
Understanding the evolving world and remaining ahead of the
curve is at the core of what we do at CheckFire, which is why we have our LFX
range of fire extinguishers, specifically designed to provide a safe means of
escape during a lithium-ion battery fire. With proper education and a robust
fire risk assessment, you too can mitigate #thehiddenrisk of lithium-ion
battery fires.
