Competence is currently a hot topic in our industry.' The 2018 Hackitt Review, Building a Safer Future, identified competence shortcomings in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017.' As a result, , The Competence Steering Group was set up. 'Comprising 150 institutions and associations, the CSG produced their 164-page report, entitled Setting the Bar ' A New Competence Regime for Building a Safer Future, in October 2020.' The aim is to improve the competence of those procuring, designing, constructing, inspecting, assessing, managing and maintaining higher-risk residential buildings.' But what does that mean for the individual and the organisation?' Now that we've identified competence inadequacies in our sector, what are some simple actions we can take to identify the gaps in our collective and individual knowledge?' What practical steps can we take to move forward?' Andrea White's presentation will address these questions and discuss how we can shift from thinking of CPD as an inconvenient box-ticking exercise towards a career culture of continual development and collaboration.
